Depression is a common condition affecting more than 1 out of 20 Americans 12 years of age and older according to the CDC.  It is a disease that can affect a person of any age, race or social standing.  Depression is a serious medical illness and is characterized by persistent sadness and sometimes irritability.  Depression can cause suffering for depressed individuals and can also have a negative effect on families and the communities in which they live.
